Antimicrobial activity of n Action
Azithromycin is an antibiotic first azaliden, a new class of macrolides.
Azithromycin has a broad spectrum of activity and is active against most strains of the following microorganisms:
 Gram - positive bacteria: Streptococcus pneumonie, S. pyogenes, S. agalactiae, S. viridans, Streptococcus group C, F and G and Staphylococcus aureus;
 Gram - negative bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae, H. parainfluenzae, H. ducreyi, Moraxella catarrhalis, Bordetella pertussis, B. parapertussis, Legionella pneumophilia, Brucella melitensis, Helicobacter pylori, Campylobacter jejuni, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Gardnerella vaginalis;
  Anaerobic bacteria: Bacteroides bivius, Clostridium perfringens, and Peptostreptococcus species and Peptococcus;
  Other organisms: Chlamydia trachomatis, C. pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Ureaplasma urealytium, Treponema pallidum and Borellia burgdorferi.
Azithromycin is well absorbed after oral administration and rapidly passes from the serum into the tissues. It is widely distributed throughout the body and achieves high and sustained tissue concentrations. Azithromycin concentrates in phagocytes that migrate into the infected and thus increases the distribution of the drug in the infected tissues. Its half-life is prolonged, and the release of tissue is slow. The main route of elimination is through the bile, urinary excretion is low.
The pharmacokinetics of azithromycin provide short and simple dosing regimen, once daily for 3 days.
