What is Losartan HD and what it is used?

Losartan HD is a combination of an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (losartan) and a diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide). HD Losartan is indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension (high blood pressure).
 

 Before taking Cozaar HD

 
Do not take Losartan HD:
  if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to losartan, hydrochlorothiazide or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to a group of medicines called "sulfonamide derivatives" (eg other thiazides, some antibacterial drugs such as co-trimoxazole, ask your doctor if you are unsure):
  if you are more than 3 months. (You should avoid taking Losartan HD in early pregnancy, see section "Pregnancy and lactation".)
 If you have severely impaired liver function;
  if you have severe renal impairment or kidneys are not producing any urine;
  if you have low potassium, low sodium or high calcium levels, which can not be corrected with treatment;
  If you suffer from gout.
 
 
Take special care with Losartan HD
  if you have swelling of the face, lips, throat and / or tongue;
  if you are taking diuretics (water pills more urine);
  If you have a restricted diet of salt;
  if you have or have had severe vomiting and / or diarrhea;
  if you have heart failure;
  if you have narrow arteries to your kidneys (renal artery stenosis) or only have one functioning kidney, or you have recently had a kidney transplant;
  if you have narrowing of the arteries (atherosclerosis), angina (chest pain due to poor heart function);
  if you have 'aortic or mitral stenosis "(narrowing of the heart valves) or" hypertrophic cardiomyopathy "(disease causing thickening of the heart muscle);
  if you have diabetes;
 
if you have gout;
  if you have or have had an allergic condition, asthma or a condition that causes joint pain, skin rashes and fever (systemic lupus erythematosus);
 if you have high levels of calcium and low potassium or have a restricted diet of potassium;
 
 If you will be given anesthesia (even at the dentist) or before surgery, or you will have tests to determine the function of the parathyroid gland, you should let your doctor or medical personnel that you are taking tablets losartan potassium and hydrochlorothiazide;
  if you suffer from primary hyperaldosteronism (a syndrome associated with increased secretion of the hormone aldosterone by the adrenal glands caused by abnormalities in the gland).
 
You must tell your doctor if you think you are (or might become) pregnant. HD Losartan is not recommended in early pregnancy, and must not be taken during pregnancy after three months, as it may cause serious harm to your baby if used at that stage (see section "Pregnancy and lactation").
 
Taking other medicines
 
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
 
Diuretic agents such as the hydrochlorothiazide contained in HD Cozaar may interact with other medicines. Preparations containing lithium should not be taken with Losartan HD without close supervision by your doctor. May be appropriate precautions (eg blood tests) if you are taking potassium supplements, potassium-containing salt substitutes or potassium-sparing medicines, other diuretics (drugs more urine), some laxatives, medicines for gout, medicines to control heart rhythm or for diabetes (oral agents or insulin). It is also important that your doctor know if you are taking other medicines that lower blood pressure, steroids, medicines to treat cancer, pain relievers, medicines for fungal infections or arthritis resins used for high cholesterol like cholestyramine, medicines which relax muscles, sleeping pills, opiates such as morphine, 'pressor amines "such as adrenaline or other drugs of the same group (oral drugs to treat diabetes, or insulin).
Please tell your doctor if you are planning to apply iodine contrast media being treated with Losartan HD.
  
Taking Losartan HD with food and drink
 
You are advised not to drink alcohol while taking these tablets: alcohol and Losartan HD tablets may mutually reinforce their effects.
 
Excessive intake of salt in the diet can counteract the effect of Losartan tablets HD. Losartan HD tablets may be taken with or without food.
 
Pregnancy and lactation
 
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine
 
Pregnancy
 
You must tell your doctor if you think you are (or might become) pregnant. Your doctor will advise you to stop taking Cozaar HD before you become pregnant or as soon as you know you are pregnant and will advise you to take another medicine instead of Losartan HD. HD Losartan is not recommended in early pregnancy, and must be taken after the third month of pregnancy because it may cause serious harm to your baby if used after the third month of pregnancy.
 
Breastfeeding
 
Tell your doctor that you are breast feeding, or will start breast-feeding. HD Losartan is not recommended for mothers who are breast feeding, and your doctor may choose another treatment for you if you are breastfeeding, especially if your baby is newborn, or was born prematurely.
 
Use in children and adolescents
 
There is no experience with the use of Losartan HD in children. Therefore HD Losartan should not be given to children.
 
Use in elderly patients
 
Losartan HD works equally well and is equally well tolerated by most elderly and younger patients. Most older patients require the same dose as it applies to the younger.
 
Driving and operating machinery
 
When you start treatment with this medicine should not perform activities requiring special attention (eg, driving an automobile or operating dangerous machinery) until you know how you react to this medicine.
 
Important information about some of the ingredients in Losartan HD
 
Losartan HD contains lactose. If you know your doctor that you have intolerance to some sugars, consult your doctor before taking the drug slowed pulse. changes in blood electrolytes and dehydration.
 
If you forget to take Cozaar HD
 
Try to take Cozaar HD as prescribed.
 
Do not take a double dose to make up.

 How to take Losartan HD

 
Always HD Cozaar exactly as your doctor has told you. Your doctor will decide the right dose of Losartan HD depending on your condition and whether you are taking other medicines. It is important to continue taking Losartan HD as long as your doctor prescribes it in order to maintain control of your blood pressure. The usual starting and maintenance dose for most patients is one tablet of Losartan H (50 mg/12, 5 mg) daily. If necessary, your doctor will increase the dose to 2 tablets Losartan H once daily or one tablet of Losartan HD (losartan 100 mg / hydrochlorothiazide 25 mg) daily.
 
The maximum dose is one tablet daily Losartan HD (100 mg/25 mg).
 
If you have the impression that the effect of the drug is too strong or too weak, tell your doctor or pharmacist
If you take an overdose of Cozaar HD
 
If you take too much Losartan dose contact your doctor immediately to get medical attention promptly. Overdose can cause a drop in blood pressure, palpitations.
 

 Possible side effects

 
Like all medicines, Cozaar HD can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
 
If you experience the following, stop taking Cozaar HD tablets contact your doctor immediately or go to the casualty department at your nearest hospital:
 
Severe allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, mouth or throat which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing). This is a serious but rare side effect, which affects more than 1 in 10,000 patients, but less than 1 in 1000 patients. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalization.
 
The following adverse reactions have been reported:
 
Common (occurring in less than one person in 10 but more than one person in 100):
  Cough, an infection of the upper respiratory tract, nasal congestion, sinusitis, sinus disorder,
  Diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, dyspepsia (indigestion)
  Muscle pain or cramps, leg pain, back pain,
 Insomnia, headache, dizziness,
  Weakness, fatigue, chest pain,
 Increased potassium levels (which can cause an abnormal heart rhythm), decreased hemoglobin levels.
 
 
Uncommon (occurring in less than one person in 100 but more than one person in 1000):
  Anaemia, red or brownish spots on the skin (sometimes especially on the feet, legs, arms and buttocks, with joint pain, swelling of the hands and feet and stomach pain), decrease in white blood cells, clotting and bruising,
  Loss of appetite, increased levels of uric acid or gout, increased levels of blood glucose, abnormal blood electrolyte levels,
  Anxiety, nervousness, panic disorder (recurring panic attacks), confusion, depression, abnormal dreams, sleep disturbance, drowsiness, impaired memory,
  Numbness and tingling or similar sensations, pain in extremity, tremor, migraine, loss of consciousness,
 
Blurred vision, burning or stinging in the eye, conjunctivitis, worsening eyesight, seeing things in yellow
  Various noises in ears - ringing, buzzing, roaring or clicking,
  Low blood pressure may be associated with a change in position (dizzy or faint when you stand up, angina (chest pain), irregular heartbeat, cerebrovascular accident (TIA, "mini-stroke"), heart attack, heart palpitations ,

  Frequent urination including at night, abnormal renal function, including inflammation of the kidneys, urinary tract infection, sugar in urine
  Decreased sexual desire, impotence,
  Swelling of the face, fever.
 
Rare (affects more than 1 in 10,000 patients and less than 1 in 1000 patients)
  Hepatitis (liver inflammation), abnormal liver function.
If any of the side effects gets serious, or you notice other effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor.
 

 How to store Losartan HD

 
Do not use Cozaar HD after the expiry date stated on the carton. Store below 25 ° C.
Keep out of reach of children.
