What Jentadueto and what it is used
The name of your tablet 's Jentadueto. It contains two different active substances linagliptin and metformin.
Linagliptin belongs to a class of drugs called DPP- 4 inhibitors (dipeptidyl peptidase -4 inhibitors) ;
Metformin belongs to a class of medicines called biguanides .
How does Jentadueto
The two active ingredients work together to control blood sugar in adults with a form of diabetes called " type 2 diabetes " . This medicine helps to improve the levels of insulin after a meal and lowers the amount of sugar made by your body.
Along with diet and exercise, this medicine helps to reduce your blood sugar. Jentadueto may be used alone or with certain other antidiabetic drugs , such as a sulphonylurea .
What is type 2 diabetes ?
Type 2 diabetes is also called non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or NIDDM. Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which your body does not produce enough insulin , and the insulin does not work as well as it should . Furthermore, your body can also make too much sugar . When this happens, sugar ( glucose) builds up in the blood. This can cause serious health problems like heart disease, kidney disease , blindness and amputation.
2 . What you should know before taking Jentadueto
Do not take Jentadueto
if you are allergic to linagliptin or metformin or any of the other ingredients of this medicine (listed in Section 6) ;
if you have kidney problems ;
if you have a severe infection or are dehydrated ;
if you have ever had a diabetic coma ;
if you have diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication of diabetes with high blood sugar, rapid weight loss , nausea and vomiting);
if you have recently had a heart attack or have severe circulatory problems , such as 'shock ' or breathing problems ;
if you have liver problems;
if you drink alcohol to excess (either every day or only from time to time) .
Do not take Jentadueto, if any of the above applies to you . If you are not sure, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
Warnings and Precautions
Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse before taking Jentadueto:
if you have type 1 diabetes (the body does not produce insulin). Jentadueto should not be used to treat this condition ;
if you are taking anti-diabetic medication known as " sulphonylurea ," Your doctor may decide to reduce the dose of sulphonylurea , when taken together with Jentadueto, to avoid low blood sugar ( hypoglycemia) ;
if you have a combination of any of the following symptoms : feeling cold or uncomfortable, severe nausea or vomiting , abdominal pain , severe asthenia, unexplained weight loss , muscle cramps, or rapid breathing. Metformin hydrochloride, one of the ingredients of Jentadueto, can cause a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis ( build up of lactic acid in the blood) that can cause death. Lactic acidosis is a medical emergency and must be treated in hospital. If you experience any of the symptoms of lactic acidosis stop taking Jentadueto and immediately consult a physician. Lactic acidosis can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption or prolonged fasting ;
during treatment with Jentadueto Your doctor will monitor your kidney function at least once a year and more often if you are elderly or if your kidney function is borderline or at risk of worsening ;
if you have an operation under general, spinal or epidural anesthesia. You may need to stop taking Jentadueto for several days before and after the procedure;
if you are X-ray with injection of contrast media. It is necessary to stop taking Jentadueto before or at the time of X-ray , and for 2 days or more thereafter. Before taking over Jentadueto, you should check your kidney function.
If you have symptoms of acute pancreatitis , and persistent, severe abdominal pain , you should consult your doctor.

Children and adolescents
This medicine is not recommended for children under 18.
Other medicines and Jentadueto
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking , have recently taken or might take other medicines.
In particular , you should tell your doctor if you are using these medicines, including those that contain any of the following active substances:
carbamazepine, phenobarbital or phenytoin. They can be used for the control of seizures ( convulsions ) or chronic pain ;
cimetidine , a medicine used to treat bowel disorders ;
rifampicin . This antibiotic is used to treat infections , such as tuberculosis ;
drugs used to treat inflammatory diseases such as asthma and arthritis ( corticosteroids) ;
drugs that increase urine production ( diuretics)
bronchodilators ( beta -sympathomimetics ) for the treatment of bronchial asthma ;
iodinated contrast agents ( which you can get while you are having an x-ray ), or medicines that contain alcohol.
Avoid alcohol and medicines containing alcohol while taking Jentadueto.
There is increased risk of lactic acidosis after excessive alcohol use (especially in the case of fasting, malnutrition or hepatic disease) due to the presence of the active ingredient metformin.
Pregnancy and lactation
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, you may be pregnant or planning to become pregnant , ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
You should not use Jentadueto, if you are pregnant . It is not known whether this medication is harmful to the fetus.

Driving and using machines
Jentadueto has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
However , the intake of Jentadueto in combination with medicines called sulphonylureas can cause very low blood sugar (hypoglycemia ), which can affect your ability to drive and use machines or work without safe foothold .
3 . How to take Jentadueto
Always take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
How much to take
Amount Jentadueto, which will take varies depending on your condition and the doses of metformin and / or the individual tablets linagliptin and metformin are currently taking . Your doctor will tell you exactly what dose of this medicine you should take.
How to take this medicine :
one tablet twice daily , taken orally in the dose prescribed by your doctor ;

You must not exceed the maximum recommended daily dose of 5 mg linagliptin and 2000 mg metformin hydrochloride.

You should continue your diet during treatment with Jentadueto and carbohydrate intake is equally distributed throughout the day. If you take more than you should Jentadueto, immediately contact your doctor.
If you forget to take Jentadueto
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if you remember just before the time for the next dose , skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose. Never take two doses at the same time (morning or evening).
If you stop taking Jentadueto
Do not stop taking Jentadueto, until your doctor tells you to be able to keep their blood sugar under control.

4 . Possible side effects
Like all medicines, this medicine may cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
Some symptoms require immediate medical attention
You should stop taking Jentadueto and immediately see your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia ): shaking, sweating , anxiety , blurred vision , numbness of the lips, paleness , mood or confusion . Hypoglycaemia ( frequency: very common) side effect was observed in taking the combination of Jentadueto and sulphonylurea .
Very rarely patients taking metformin ( one of the active ingredients of Jentadueto) experienced a serious condition called lactic acidosis ( too much lactic acid in the blood) . It occurs more frequently in patients whose kidneys are not functioning properly. Stop taking Jentadueto and immediately see a doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms:
nausea or vomiting, abdominal pain, extreme weakness , muscle cramps, unusual weight loss , rapid breathing , feeling cold or uncomfortable .
Some patients received an inflammation of the pancreas ( pancreatitis , with an unknown frequency , the frequency can not be estimated from the available data). If you experience severe and persistent stomach pain or not accompanied by vomiting, contact your doctor as you may have pancreatitis.
Other adverse reactions include Jentadueto :

Very rare ( may affect up to 1 in 10 000) decreased levels of vitamin B12, liver dysfunction , hepatitis ( a liver problem ) , skin reactions such as redness of the skin ( erythema , rash) , and hives .

5 . How to store Jentadueto
Keep out of reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date stated on the blister , bottle and carton after 'EXP' . The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
This medicine does not require any special temperature storage conditions.
Blister : Store in the original package to protect from moisture.
