Doxycycline WHAT IS AND WHAT IT IS USED
Doxycycline belongs to a group of medicines called tetracycline antibiotics. They are used for the treatment of many different types of infections , including . :
Respiratory tract infections - pneumonia, bronchitis , sinusitis ;
Urinary tract infections - inflammation of the bladder and the urethra ;
Sexually transmitted diseases - syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydial infection;
Infections of the skin - acne ;
Eye infections ;
Fever associated with bites from lice or ticks ;
Malaria when not amenable to treatment with other anti-malarial drugs ;
Doxycycline Actavis can be used for the prophylaxis of certain infections, such as fever (severe disease caused by R.tsutsugamushi - type small insects ) , cholera , " travel " diarrhea , malaria , leptospirosis ( bacterial infection ), and the like .
Doxycycline Actavis can be used for treatment of other infections that have not been mentioned above , but also may be combined with other products for the treatment of your infection . If you have questions , please ask your doctor.
2 . BEFORE YOU USE Doxycycline
Do not use Doxycycline
If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to doxycycline tetracycline or any other antibiotic, or any of the other ingredients of Actavis Doxycycline (see item 6 ) ;
If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant ;
If you are breastfeeding at the time ;
If the product is prescribed to a child under 12 years.
Doxycycline Actavis and other products of the tetracycline line must not be used during the period of tooth development ( the second half of pregnancy , infancy , and in children under 12 years), since they can lead to a permanent change in the color developing teeth (yellow - gray- brown) .
Take special care with Doxycycline
Please tell your doctor if any of the following apply to you :
If you are likely to be exposed to strong sunlight or ultraviolet light ( beach, solarium ) . While taking this drug should avoid exposure to strong sunlight because the skin can become more sensitive than usual to sunburn;
If you have liver damage or are taking other products that are known to damage the liver;
If you have myasthenia gravis (a disease that causes fatigue and weakness of certain muscles , especially of the eyelids ) ;
If you have porphyria ( a rare disease affecting blood pigments ) ;
If you have ( or have had ) Systemic lupus erythematosus ( disorder of the immune system that causes joint pain , skin rashes, fever) . This condition may get worse when taking Doxycycline Actavis ;
If you get severe headaches during treatment with doxycycline Actavis ;
If you experience irritation or sores in the throat and esophagus when taken immediately before bedtime or with a small amount of liquid. This can be observed in the treatment of almost all types of tetracycline antibiotics , incl. Actavis doxycycline ;
If an inflammation of the vagina caused by a fungus , which is manifested by itching and , optionally , leucorrhoea ( vaginal candidiasis ) . During treatment with antimicrobial agents, incl. Actavis doxycycline , can be observed and micro-organisms sensitive to the antibiotic , which will require treatment discontinuation and appointment of appropriate medication ;
If during the treatment with doxycycline Actavis appear diarrhea . Observed damage to the colon ( pseudomembranous colitis ) with the use of virtually all antimicrobial agents, incl. Actavis Doxycycline , which can occur with varying severity . A discontinuation of the product;
On suspicion of concomitant syphilis during treatment with doxycycline Actavis on another occasion , your doctor will continue to monitor you after treatment discontinuation ;
If you need to make your blood and urine should know that you are taking Doxycycline Actavis , as it may change some of the results .
Taking other medicines
Please tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
Some medicines may reduce the effectiveness of Doxycycline Actavis . These include:
Antacids (for heartburn) , products containing iron, zinc and bismuth . Their intake should be as remote in time from the intake of Doxycycline ;
Carbamazepine, phenytoin ( medicines used for the treatment of epilepsy ) and barbiturates (for the treatment of epilepsy and sedation ) .
Doxycycline can interfere with some medicines:
Enhances the action of Warfarin and coumarin anticoagulant drugs ( to prevent blood clots ) ;
Reduces the effectiveness of oral contraceptives ( birth control pills) ;
Reduces the effectiveness of the antibiotics penicillin (to treat infections) ;
Increases blood levels of cyclosporine ( suppresses the immune response of the body).
Doxycycline should not be combined with :
Rifampicin ( antimycobacterial antibiotic) ;
Probenecid ( for gout ) ;
Calcium and products containing calcium ;
Didanosine ( an antiviral agent for the treatment of AIDS ) ;
Concomitant use with methoxyflurane ( anesthetic ) may lead to irreversible damage of the kidneys.
Taking Doxycycline with food and drink :
Alcohol can reduce the effect of Actavis Doxycycline . You should therefore avoid the use of alcohol during treatment.
Pregnancy and lactation
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine .
Actavis Doxycycline is contraindicated during pregnancy. Risks associated with its use during pregnancy is attributed to their effects on tooth and bone and skeletal development.
You should consult with your doctor immediately if you become pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking this medicine .
Doxycycline passes into breast milk and therefore is contraindicated during lactation .
Driving and using machines
The effect of doxycycline Actavis on the ability to drive or operate machinery has not been studied . No data are available to suggest that the product may affect this ability.
Important information about some of the ingredients of Doxycycline
This medicinal product contains lactose (milk sugar). If you are advised by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars, contact your doctor before you start taking this medicine .
3 . HOW TO TAKE Doxycycline
Always take Doxycycline exactly as your doctor tells you . If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
The capsules should be taken with plenty of fluid while sitting or standing posture and a long time before sleep to reduce the risk of irritation or sores on the appearance of the esophagus. Best be taken at the same time of day.
In gastric irritation , it is recommended the adoption of the product with food or milk.
The usual dose Doxycycline for the treatment of acute infections in adults is 200 mg every other day ( 2 capsules ) taken together or separately, with an interval of 12 hours between them , followed by a maintenance dose of 100 mg ( 1 capsule ) per day. In the treatment of more severe infections (particularly chronic infections of the urinary tract ), 200 mg ( 2 capsules) daily should be applied throughout the period of treatment.
Treatment should continue for at least 24-48 hours after the fever and the symptoms of the disease.
Your doctor may require different doses , depending on the type of infection to heal and condition .
Acne ( skin infection ): 100 mg / day ( one capsule) taken with food or liquids for 6-12 weeks ;
Infections , sexually transmitted : 100 mg ( 1 capsule) twice daily for 7 days ;
Primary and secondary syphilis : 2 capsules twice daily for at least 10 days, your doctor will continue to monitor you after treatment discontinuation ;
Fever, transmitted by ticks and lice : a single dose of 1 or 2 capsules, depending on the severity of the infection ;
Treatment of malaria when other anti-malarial agents ( chloroquine ) are not effective : 2 capsules a day for at least 7 days ;
Prevention of malaria : 1 capsule a day 1-2 days before departure for malaria area continued during the stay and until 4 weeks after return ;
Prevention of typhoid fever caused by R.tsutsugamushi ( type small insects ): 2 capsules in a single dose ;
Prevention of ' travel ' diarrhea in adults: 2 capsules on the first day of the trip ( given as a single dose or 1 capsule every 12 hours ) , followed by 1 capsule daily during the entire stay in the designated area . If you plan to stay more than 21 days and taking medication , please consult a doctor ;
Prevention of leptospirosis (a type of bacterial infection ): 2 capsules once a week for the entire stay in the affected area and 2 capsules after leaving the area. If you plan to stay more than 21 days and taking medicine , please consult a doctor.
Actavis Doxycycline may prescribe at usual doses without special instructions.
Patients with renal impairment:
Studies to date indicate that Actavis Doxycycline can be given at usual doses .
If you take more than the amount of Actavis Doxycycline
Contact your doctor or nearest hospital .
In such cases, take gastric lavage and the appointment of appropriate treatment.
If you forget to take Doxycycline Actavis
Take the dose as soon as you remember , but if it is almost time for your next take the next as prescribed. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop taking Doxycycline
Do not stop taking Doxycycline throughout the course of treatment even if you feel better. If you stop taking Doxycycline Actavis too soon , the infection may return .

4 . POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, Doxycycline can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them . If you are not sure what the following side effects , ask your doctor to explain them to you .
Below are listed possible side effects by frequency.
Very common: They can be seen in more than 1 in 10 patients ;
Common: may occur in 1 to 10 in every 100 patients ;
Uncommon: may occur in 1 to 10 out of 1000 patients ;
Rare: may occur in 1 to 10 out of 10 000 patients ;
Very rare: may occur in less than 1 in 10,000 patients ;
Not known: frequency can not be estimated from the available data.
Blood and lymphatic system disorders:
Rare: hemolytic anemia ( low red blood cells) , thrombocytopenia ( low platelet count ), neutropenia ( low white blood cells) and eosinophilia ( increased number of eosinophils - a type of white blood cell) .
Immune system disorders :
Rare : hypersensitivity reactions , including . anaphylactic shock, anaphylaxis, anaphylactoid reactions , anaphylactoid purpura , serum sickness ( severe allergic reactions causing difficulty in breathing , dizziness , pinpoint hemorrhages on the skin) , decrease in blood pressure , inflammation of the lining of the heart , angioneurotic edema (severe allergic reaction to swelling of the face or throat ) symptoms exacerbation of systemic lupus erythematosus ( disorder of the immune system, joint pain , skin rashes and fever ) , shortness of breath , swelling of the extremities, fast heartbeat , and urticaria .
Metabolism and nutrition disorders:
Rare: anti- anabolic effect ( splitting) .
Nervous system disorders :
Uncommon : headache ;
Rare " blistering " ( convex ) fontanelle in infants and intracranial hypertension in adolescents and adults. Symptoms include blurred vision , blind spots in your vision and double vision .
Ear and labyrinth disorders:
Common: nausea ;
Uncommon : vomiting, diarrhea , glossitis ( inflammation of the tongue ) ;
Rare : abdominal pain , loss of appetite , difficulty in swallowing , indigestion, inflammation of the small intestine , pseudomembranous colitis ( inflammation of the colon from the overgrowth of bacteria with the use of antibiotics), and inflammation in the area of the anus ( overgrowth of fungi in the use of antibiotics ) . Inflammation and sores in the esophagus were seen in patients taking the capsule form of the drug.
Rare : changes in liver function , inflammation of the liver , jaundice , liver failure and inflammation of the pancreas.
Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders:
Uncommon: sensitivity to sunlight and ultraviolet light , skin rashes ;
Rare: exfoliative dermatitis , erythema multiforme, Stevens- Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis ( severe illness accompanied by blistering of the skin , mouth, eyes and genitals ) onikoliza ( removal of the nail ) .
Musculo - skeletal and connective tissue disorders:
Rare: pain in joints and muscles.
Congenital, familial and genetic disorders
Unknown: porphyria (a rare disease affecting the blood pigment ) .
Renal and urinary disorders:
Not known: increased blood urea nitrogen (test to assess kidney function).
Reproductive system and breast disorders:
Unknown: vaginitis (inflammation of the vagina in women ) .
Rare: the emergence of brown - black microscopic discoloration of the thyroid tissue in long-term use of tetracyclines .
If any of the side effects gets serious , or you notice other effects not listed in this leaflet , please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
5 . HOW TO STORE Doxycycline
At temperatures below 25 ° C.
Store in original container.
Keep out of reach of children!
Do not use Doxycycline Actavis after the expiry date stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required . These measures will help to protect the environment.

The active substance is doxycycline hyclate (doxycycline hyclate).
Actavis doxycycline 100 mg capsules contain doxycycline hyclate (Doxycycline hyclate), eq. Doxycycline (Doxycycline) and 100 mg.
Other ingredients are:
Alginic acid ;
Sodium lauryl sulfate;
Lactose monohydrate ;
Magnesium stearate .
