DULKOLAKS WHAT IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR?
DULKOLAKS is a locally acting laxative that stimulates bowel movements and softens the stool.
DULKOLAKS be used for administration to patients with constipation (difficult bowel movements), the preparation of diagnostic procedures prior to and after surgery, and in conditions which are required to facilitate defecation.
2 BEFORE YOU TAKE DULKOLAKS
Do not take DULKOLAKS
if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to bisacodyl or any of the other ingredients of DULKOLAKS;
if you volvulus or bowel obstruction
if you have an acute surgical abdomen, including appendicitis or acute inflammation of the intestines;
if your body is severely dehydrated;
if you have severe abdominal pain, accompanied by nausea and vomiting - this may be indicative of more serious conditions;
if you have a rare hereditary disease that can result in incompatibility with some of the ingredients of the product (see Important information about some of the ingredients of DULKOLAKS).
Take special care with DULKOLAKS
- If you have need laxatives every day or for an extended period of time - you have to contact your doctor to determine the cause of constipation, as prolonged use of high doses may lead to a violation of water and electrolyte balance and lowering the level of potassium in your blood (hypokalemia); if you notice a feeling of thirst or increased urine output, which can be symptoms of dehydration due to fluid loss and can be harmful in the elderly and in patients with renal impairment - should stop taking DULKOLAKS and contact your doctor.
May experience blood in the stool, but it is usually mild and resolves spontaneously.
Reported manifestations are dizziness and / or fit for patients treated with DULKOLAKS. These adverse events may be associated with constipation (difficult defecation, abdominal pain), and are not necessarily associated with administration of bisacodyl.
Children should not take DULKOLAKS without prescription.
Taking other medicines
Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.
In high doses DULKOLAKS concomitant use of diuretics (water resources) or steroids may increase the risk of electrolyte imbalance. Electrolyte imbalance may lead to increased susceptibility to cardiac glycosides (group of medicines used to treat heart failure and irregular heart rhythm, such as digoxin).
The tablets have a special coating and should not be taken with drugs that reduce the acidity of the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as antacids or proton pump inhibitors.
Taking DULKOLAKS with food and drink
The tablets have a special coating and must not be taken with products that reduce the acidity of the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as milk.
Pregnancy and lactation
Ask your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine.
Like all medicines, DULKOLAKS should be taken during pregnancy only on prescription. DULKOLAKS can be taken during breast-feeding.
Driving and using machines
No studies on the effects of DULKOLAKS on ability to drive and use machines.
However, you should know that because of colic associated with constipation may experience dizziness and / or fainting. If you get colic should avoid potentially hazardous activities such as driving or operating machinery.
Important information about some of the ingredients of DULKOLAKS
One tablet contains 33,2 mg lactose, leading to 66,4 mg per maximum recommended daily dose for the treatment of constipation in adults and children over 10 years. In preparation for radiographic studies leading to 132,8 mg at the maximum recommended daily dose. Patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, such as galactosemia should not take this medicine.
One tablet contains 23,4 mg of sucrose, which leads to 46,8 mg of the maximum daily dose for the treatment of constipation in adults and children over 10 years. In preparation for radiographic studies leading to 93,6 mg per maximum recommended daily dose. Patients with rare hereditary problems of fructose intolerance should not take this medicine.
3 HOW TO TAKE DULKOLAKS?
Always take DULKOLAKS exactly as described in this leaflet or as you have been told your pharmacist. If you are not sure, ask your doctor or pharmacist. The usual dose is:
Short-term treatment of constipation:
Adults and children over 10 years:
1-2 tablets (5-10 mg) daily before bedtime.
Children 2 -10 years:
1 tablet (5 mg) daily before bedtime. Children 10 years of age or less chronic or persistent constipation should not be treated without a prescription.
Method of administration
Tablets should be taken at night to produce a bowel movement the next morning. The tablets should be swallowed whole, with a corresponding amount of fluid (but not milk, see "Taking DULKOLAKS with food and drink").
The tablets should be taken with products that reduce the acidity of the upper gastrointestinal tract, such as milk or antacids, proton pump inhibitors, in order not to prematurely dissolve the gastro-resistant coating of the tablets.
In preparation for diagnostic procedures before surgery
In preparation for diagnostic procedures before surgery and use of DULKOLAKS should be done under medical supervision.
Adults and children over 10 years:
In order to achieve complete release of the intestinal tract, the recommended dosage for adults is
2 tablets (10 mg) taken in the morning and 2 tablets (10 mg), taken the night before the study and application of laxative with immediate effect (eg. Suppository) the next morning.
Children 4-10 years:
The recommended dose for children 4 years and older is one tablet (5 mg), taken in the evening and implementation of a laxative with immediate effect for children (eg. Suppository) the next morning.
If you take use more dose DULKOLAKS
If you take more than you should DULKOLAKS, you should seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist.
If taking high doses may occur watery stools, abdominal cramping, and loss of fluid, potassium, and other electrolytes.
Chronic overdose DULKOLAKS, as with all medicines can cause chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, reduced blood potassium, secondary hyperaldosteronism (increased production of the hormone aldosterone, which controls the levels of sodium and potassium in the blood) and kidney disease. Cases of renal tubular damage (type renal dysfunction), metabolic alkalosis (disturbance of acid-base balance and muscle weakness, due to the reduced content of potassium in the blood, have been described as a result of chronic abuse of laxatives.
If you forget to take DULKOLAKS
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember but do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.
If you stop taking pa use DULKOLAKS
DULKOLAKS should be used only when necessary and should be discontinued use in resolution of symptoms.

4 POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
As with all medications, DULKOLAKS can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Not known swelling of the skin and mucous membranes of the mouth or throat
which may cause difficulty in breathing (angioedema), rapidly progressive, life-threatening allergic (anaphylactic) reactions

Nervous system disorders Uncommon: dizziness
Dizziness and fainting may be caused by constipation (herb by defecation, abdominal pain), and does not relate to the use of bisacodyl.

Uncommon: abdominal discomfort, vomiting, blood in the stool, discomfort in the anus and rectum
Not known: inflammation of the intestines

5 HOW TO STORE DULKOLAKS?
This medicinal product does not require any special storage conditions.
Keep out of reach of children.
DULKOLAKS not use after the expiry date stated on the carton.
6 FURTHER INFORMATION
The active substance is 5 mg bisacodyl.
The other ingredients are lactose, corn starch, soluble starch, glycerol, magnesium stearate, sucrose, talc, arabic gum, titanium dioxide, Eudragit L100 and S100, castor oil, macrogol 6000, yellow iron oxide (E 172), white beeswax, carnauba wax, shellac.
